2004 US National Womens Recurve Division Archery Content
Found this video on google which shows a recurve archery contest for Women back in 2004. It is good for people who don't know much about the sport and it shows the technique of these semi-professional archers.

  Double Victory!
Penny and I went to Archery for the last day of our introductory training with Guildford Archery Club. Today was the first introduction to competition rules and scoring.

We were scoring with Imperial measurements which means:

Gold - 9 points
Red - 7 points
Blue - 5 points
Black - 3 points
White - 1 point

Metric is 1 - 10 from outer to inner ring as each colour is divided into two rings. So you can potentially score higher with Metric compared to Imperial.

I felt I did quite well, although not quite as good as the previous week. But at the end of the session we were taken into a back room for some presentations and... I was shocked to hear.... wait for it...

I WON!
Best Male Archer Score & Best Overall Score.
Score: 206
Average of: 8.58!

It was a double whammy because Penny (my better half)

WON TOO!!!
Best Female Archer Score
Score: 190
Average: 7.92

I was REALLY pleased and so was Penny. We both were proud to be referred to as "the Husband & Wife winning team". We won chocolate - bang goes the diet - but we for once felt we earned it.

I feel my technique is coming along well, but feel I have to be careful not to build on dodgy foundations. I mustn't let some bad habits creep in so I can continue to do well. My bloody left shoulder tends to creep around and get twanged by the bow string.

I will be joining the Guildford Archery Club next Sunday and doing my first shoot with other club members. I have met some great people and had some really good fun in the process.

I highly recommend the Guildford Archery Club.

  Diary_ My Second Shoot
Had a great time, scored many more golds. I lost count. Basically I was getting 75% in gold and 25% in red. One shot in gold was 2 mm from the central cross. Not bad considering we are even further away from the target today. I find myself becoming increasingly competitive, I heard that next week will be a contest, I am really looking forward to it which is completely unlike me. I will let you know how I get on. on the downside, the bow that I bought from eBay is a little bit old and I might have to sell it and get something more up-to-date, it is a great bow, but the problem is that it would be very hard to get replacement limbs.

Info_: How to String a Recurve Bow using a Stringer
OK - here are my basic instructions (it assumes you know what things are called) - please remember I am still a novice and am learning myself - I will correct things if they are wrong. Alway be VERY careful when stringing a bow, it can be dangerous if done wrong and you could seriously injure yourself.

1) Assemble your limbs to the riser
2) Take your strong and hook the LARGER loop over the TOP limb
3) Then hook the SMALLER loop over the BOTTOM limb
NOTE: Make sure it is in the groove on the bottom limb
4) Hook the LARGER loop of the bow stringer over the TOP limb
5) Hook the SMALLER pouch over the BOTTOM limb.
6) Hold the riser and let the strings dangle down
7) Tread on the stringer string and pull the riser
8) When you have applied enough pressure you can slip the LARGER loop of the string into the noc at the end of the TOP limb.
9) Then slide off the bow stringer.

Bob's yer uncle. Taking down a bow is the same procedure in reverse and it a great deal easier.

I found this set of intructions at http://www.kidbow.com/ I must admit they didn't really help me much, but I will post them here for your information.

How to Use a Bow Stringer

One of the first things you need to know when stringing a Recurve bow is that the large
loop of the string goes on the top limb, while the small loop goes on the bottom limb.
This order is important because the small loop will generally stay in position on the
lower limb while stringing and unstringing the bow. And, the upper loop, or large loop,
will be traveling up and down the limb when stringing and unstringing the bow. Since
the limb tip is smaller than the width of the limb below the tip, the loop needs to be a bit
larger.
The position of the bowstring is very important. The strings bottom loop must fit
securely in the groove in the bottom limb. Before releasing pressure on the limbs, make
sure that both string loops are still in the grooves on the limbs. Stringing the bow can be
dangerous if not done properly.
The cord stringer method is the safest and most commonly used method.
The cord stringer comes as a long cord with leather pouches at both ends of the string.
These pouches fit over each end of the limb.
To use the cord stringer, first hold the bow with the front face of the bow facing
downward.
Grip the center of the riser with the hand that has the most control and strength.
With the bow facing down, put the larger pouch over the tip of the lower or bottom limb.
Then put the smallest pouch over the tip of the upper limb.
Make sure that both pouches are fitted securely over the tips.
The stringer cord should now be hanging below the bow.
Step on the stringer cord using the same side as the hand used to hold the bow.
Make sure the cord is in the middle or "ball” of your foot.
Pull upon the riser just enough to make the string taut, making sure that the lower end
of the string is still securely sitting in the grooves on the lower limb.
While still pulling up slowly on the riser, guide the string into the notches of the upper
limb.
Watch that your fingers stay to the sides of the limb, making sure not to place them
between the bow string and the face of the bow.
To unstring a recurve bow, just reverse any of these processes.
When stringing the bow, there are a few important things to remember. First, always
make sure that the string is seated properly in the grooves of the upper and lower limb
before releasing pressure. Also, always remember that the archers’ safety is the most
important.

Thing to make you go hmm

Did you know that There is a member of the spider family called the demodex folliculorum that lives at the root of people's eye lashes. It's harmless and normal.(so they claim) To look for them, grab a handful of your eyelashes and dunk them in warm water. They'll start swimming out. It is prevalent in nearly 100% of old people in the U.S.
